Sean Sovacool - Head Coach, Varsity Offensive Coordinator

Sean Sovacool is in his eleventh year as the head football coach for LCC, after coaching six very productive years at Palomar Community College. While coaching at Palomar, Sean served as the Comets’ linebacker coach and Special Teams Coordinator. In addition to coaching, Sean served several other roles at Palomar: Coordinator of the Athletic Study Hall, and as an adjunct instructor with the Athletics, Physical Education, and Counseling Departments. Sean’s prep career started at Fallbrook Union High School where he was named First Team All Avocado League for two years as well as an All North County Selection. He was also named as a First Team All CIF selection as a Middle Linebacker for the CIF Division I champions under head coach Randy Blankenship.

After graduating from Fallbrook, Sean played two seasons at Palomar Community College under Tom Craft and Joe Early respectively.  While attending Palomar, Sean was a First Team Mission Conference Selection as well as a First Team Academic All-American for the nationally fourth ranked Palomar Comets.

Upon the completion of Sean’s playing time at Palomar, he was awarded a full athletic scholarship to Northern Arizona University to play football for head coach Jerome Souers and the NAU Lumberjacks. Coach Sovacool obtained his Bachelor’s Degree in Political Science after two seasons of competition with the Lumberjacks, he was a Big Sky Conference Champion his junior year and finished his senior year third on the team in tackles and was a Big Sky All-Academic selection.

After graduating from NAU as a Big Sky All-Academic selection, Coach Sovacool came back to San Diego and obtained his teaching credential in Social Science and PE from Cal State San Marcos and his Masters in Education from Cal State University Bakersfield.  While coaching football at Palomar, Coach Sovacool was also the Coordinator of the Athletic Study Hall, and an adjunct instructor with the Athletics, Physical Education, and Counseling Department.

Coach Sovacool is a full time Physical Education teacher at La Costa Canyon High School. He and his beautiful wife of nine years Bryn Kuech Sovacool, a school nurse in the San Marcos school district, and mother of the most precious members of the Maverick football family, Lyla Rose Sovacool, Luke James Sovacool, and the newest member of the Maverick Family Logan Stone Sovacool, reside in San Marcos.  Sean’s brothers and sister also teach and coach.  His oldest brother Michael Sovacool teaches social science at Orange Glen High School, his youngest brother, Casey Sovacool is the head JV Football coach and Varsity defensive coordinator as well as the head boys Varsity Golf coach and full time Special Education teacher at La Costa Canyon High, and his sister Molly Sovacool will be entering her eighth year teaching and coaching career at Mesa Murrieta where she is the girls Varsity head lacrosse coach as well as teaching American Sign Language.  Coach Sovacool’s parents Mike Sovacool, a retired Lt Col from the Marine Corps, and Mary Kay Sovacool, an ER nurse at the Naval Hospital in Camp Pendleton as well still reside in Fallbrook.

Casey Sovacool - JV Head Coach/Varsity Defensive Coordinator

Casey Sovacool is entering his 9th year with Maverick Football. Coach Sovacool is also the Head Coach of the 2019 National Champion Varsity Boy’s Golf team. Coach Sovacool played football at Fallbrook High, where he earned All-League Honors as an offensive lineman in 2001 and was a starter on their 2000 CIF Championship team. He is a graduate of Cal Poly San Luis Obispo with a Social Sciences Degree containing a Teaching Concentration and he also holds a Master’s Degree in Special Education from CSU San Marcos. He is a Special Education teacher at La Costa Canyon. Coach lives in San Marcos with his wife Lacey and their two dogs Fisher & Maverick. Lacey & Casey welcomed their son Rivers this Spring. Coach enjoys camping, golfing and spending time with his friends and family. Coach would like to thank his friends and family for their continued love & support, those here and those that are gone.  

Patrick Casinelli- JV Offensive Coordinator

This season will be Patrick’s 19th year as a Maverick coach. He graduated from San Dieguito High School in 1984 and earned “Mustang of the Year” for football in 1983. He is a graduate of USD, receiving a degree in Business Administration. Patrick is a Partner at Cavignac & Associates, a full-service insurance agency serving San Diego County since 1992. Patrick has been in the Employee Benefits Insurance business for 30 years.  He and his wife of 28 years, Diane, have three children: Sam (24) Baseball player in Sweden and Australia, Michael (20) is a junior at University of San Diego studying a semester in Auckland New Zealand and Camella (18) is a freshman at Palomar.

Mike Connelly– Varsity/JV Defensive Line

This is Coach Connelly’s third season back with LCC Football since he graduated in 2010. As a student at LCC, Mike lettered in football and played basketball. He started every game of his junior and senior year at offensive tackle for LCC and was a key contributor during to the Maverick’s CIF Championship in 2008. After LCC, Connelly went on to play football at Palomar College and the University of Northern Iowa, before deciding to hang up the cleats due to injury. Connelly graduated from UNI with a Bachelor’s degree in Criminology in 2015. After college, he moved from Iowa back to his hometown of Encinitas. Mike currently works as a Sales Manager for Southern Wine & Spirits.

MARCO ESQUIVEL – Varsity/JV Offensive Skills

This is Coach Esquivel’s second year coaching at La Costa Canyon High School. Coach Esquivel spent 27 years coaching in Northern California—10 at the community college level (Sierra College and Sacramento City College), and 17 at the high school and youth levels. Coach Esquivel was part of the staff at Sierra College that had the second longest winning streak in California (37 straight wins from 2002-2005). He coached QB’s, and WR’s at the college level and served as the Offensive Coordinator for Sierra College in the 2006 and 2007 seasons. Coach Esquivel shared in multiple bowl wins and conference championships while at Sierra College.

 Coach Esquivel also coached for various high schools and earned a 2013 Section, Northern California Regional Championship and coached in the 2013 State Bowl Championship for Del Oro High School.

Coach Esquivel graduated in 1985 from Los Amigos High School in Fountain Valley, CA. He holds a B.A. from CSU Sacramento and a M.S. in Sports Science from the United States Sports Academy. Coach Esquivel is married (28 years) to wife, Mary and has two children: Christina 24, and Marco Jr. 20. He is recently retired from the State of California and currently serves San Diego and Placer counties as a Real Estate Agent with Coldwell Banker. 

JUSTIN HAPP – Varsity/JV Skills

Justin Happ is entering his 2nd year coaching Maverick football.  He is also a math teacher at LCC and coaches Girl's Beach Volleyball during the spring.  He loves teaching and coaching because of the unique opportunity it provides to be a role model for kids and young adults.  His favorite hobbies are snowboarding in Mammy and schooling Adam Witzmann in all things football and math related.  Justin grew up in Santee and went to West Hills High School before his family moved to Murrieta where he attended Murrieta Valley High School and began his football career.  Justin went on to play QB at Mt. San Jacinto Community College under Ed Carberry, and earned a partial athletic scholarship to Wayne State College in Nebraska. He eventually transferred to SDSU where he graduated with a B.S. in Accounting.  His brother, Garrett Happ, is also a teacher and coach at Canyon Crest Academy.  

Dale Henry-VARSITY OFFENSIVE LINE

Coach Henry is entering his 45th year of coaching. He will be working with the TEs and FBs during the 2019 season. Henry is a native San Diegan and a 1971 Sweetwater HS graduate.  He earned his degrees from CSU Fullerton and San Diego State University. He is married to Marina, a teacher at Westview HS and is the proud father of two girls. Rhiannon who practices Traditional Chinese Medicine as an acupuncturist and root pharmacologist in the North County.  Hannah a recent college graduate of the Ragin’ Cajuns at the University of Louisiana Lafayette.  She is working on a masters degree and coaching Volleyball at DePaul University in Chicago.  

Raphael Akobundu - Varsity/JV LB

Sebastian Frausto– Varsity/JV QBs

This is Coach Frausto’s 6th year coaching at LCC. Sebastian “C-Bass” Frausto graduated from LCC in 2009. He lettered in both basketball & football. On the football field, his senior year he passed for 2,246 yards with 21 touchdowns. In rushing he racked up 306 yards with 9 touchdowns. He was named 1st Team All-Avocado League & North County Times named him player of the week 3 times. The highlight of Sebastian’s LCC football career came when he helped lead the team to win the 1st ever CIF Championship at QUALCOMM Stadium. He played QB at Southwestern Oklahoma State where he received a bachelors degree in history education. In his last year he was as an assistant QBs coach under the offensive coordinator Steve Day. He than spent one season as the JV offensive coordinator of Mission Bay high school. Recently he play professional football in Barcelona, Spain for Barbera Rookies. He than played in Poland for the Wyszkow Rhinos and in Switzerland for QB for the Basel Gladiators.

Duke Mackle - Varsity/JV Defensive Back Coach

We are happy to welcome Duke Mackle to the LCC Football coaching staff this season! Coach Mackle graduated from LCC in 2015, where he lettered in football, wrestling and swimming. He recently graduated from Linfield College located in McMinnville, OR in spring of 2019 with a Business Management degree and double minor in sports management and coaching. Coach Mackle also lettered all four years in football at Linfield, which is a DIII school in the Pacific Northwest Conference.  As a defensive Back in 2018, he led the team in tackles, was first team all-league, Co-Defensive Player of the Year, and first team All-American.

Damon Moore– Varsity/JV Running Backs

This is Coach “DJ” Moore 4th year coaching at La Costa Canyon, third year coaching football but 3rd year coaching track and field at La Costa Canyon. Coach DJ Graduated from Vista Murrieta in 2011, where he lettered in both football and Track & Field.  Coach DJ went on to attend California State San Marcos on a track and field Scholarship. He graduated in 2015 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Communication. Throughout his time there, he went to nationals every year for 400 hurdles and the 4x400 relay. His biggest accomplishment was placing 4th at nationals and having the school record. Now is working towards earning his masters for athletic training.

Tim Parlier - Varsity/JV Defensive Line Coach

This is Coach Parlier’s first year with LCC Football.  Coach Parlier spent the last six seasons coaching Defensive Line at Santa Fe Christian High in Solana Beach.  He attended Thousand Oaks High School and graduated in 2001.  During his high school career he was a tri-athlete (football, wrestling, track & field) until ultimately settling on football his senior year where he was a team captain and all L.A. region top 30 lineman.  Coach Parlier graduated from San Diego State University with a B.A. in Business Management and now works in non-profit as the San Diego Coastal Area Director for FCA.  Tim and his wife Allison have lived in Encinitas for the last 12 years and have two little boys Beau (4) and Lincoln (2).

 

ED TA’AMU - Varsity D Line

Ed Ta’amu (Tah-Ah-moo) enters his fourth season with the Mavericks and second year as LCC Campus Supervisor.  Originally from Hawai’i, Coach Ed and his Mrs. reside in North County with their two boys and Old English Bulldog.  Following his Hawai'i State Defensive Player of the Year Senior season, Ta'amu played a season on defense at the University of Utah.  Coach Ed switched to offense his second year in Salt Lake City and completed his college career on the Utes' offense with a 4th Round Pick to the Minnesota Vikings.  Coach Ed's best memories of playing came after the NFL in the Arena Football League.  Ta'amu was on two arena championship teams in Spokane, WA, and claims he caught every pass thrown to him with 6 of 7 for a touchdown.

After working with Coach Sovacool on defense, Ed has been asked to focus on offense, primarily with the linemen.  He also spent some time learning from Chris Naeole at the University of Hawai’i as an Intern.  Along with his playing experience, Coach Ed hopes to improve an already good offense unit.

Kevin Witt-Varsity Skills

Coach Witt returns to La Costa Canyon for a 7th year of coaching Maverick Football. Coach Witt teaches AP Economics, AP European History and World History at San Dieguito Academy. During his prep career, Witt played four seasons for the Corona del Mar Sea Kings in Newport Beach. After graduating, Coach Witt attended U.C. San Diego, and graduated in 2005 with a degree in history. Witt then attended San Diego State, where he earned his teaching credential and Master’s degree in History.  Coach Witt is happily married to his wife of ten years, Michaelle, and they are the proud parents of Colton, Caden, and Traelock Witt.

Adam Witzmann– Varsity/JV Linebackers

Coach Witzmann is entering his 6th year of coaching football. He has previously coached at Charleston Southern as a graduate assistant, Palomar Junior College, and Mira Mesa High School. Coach Witzmann is one of 5 total Witzmann’s who have graduated from La Costa Canyon. His two older brothers, Justin and Nick, were All-CIF players, while Molly was a member of a CIF title in volleyball. In his time at LCC, he lettered in football and basketball. In football he was part of the school’s only CIF championship winning football team in 2008. In his senior year he was awarded All-CIF and Avocado league defensive player of the year. After high school, coach Witzmann spent two years at Palomar Junior College where he was twice named an All Southern Conference performer at middle linebacker. From there he accepted a scholarship to continue playing and pursuing his degree at Charleston Southern University. There he was a two year letter winner, one year starter, and majored in mathematics with a minor in religion. Coach Witzmann is also in his first year at LCC as a Math teacher.  Not included is Witzmann’s jack-of-all trades sister, Abby who makes the best smoothie in Encinitas, his super-mom Annie, and his dad Dwayne who taught him all he knows about competing and being all that he can be.

Jacob Driver-Freshman Head Coach

This is Jacob’s 6th year on the Maverick staff, and his first as head coach. Jacob is one of many of the Maverick staff that is also an alumnus. During his time at LCC, Jacob led the team to the 2008 CIF San Diego Section Division I Championship title defeating Escondido HS in their final game. Jacob continued his football career at San Diego State University, where he was a four-year letterman. The highlight of his collegiate career was making the Sports Center “Top 10 Plays” list where he was awarded the number seven spot for a big hit against an Air Force Academy receiver. 

Jacob has now chosen to commit his life to helping fellow San Diegans find their dream homes. He has been working in the real estate industry since 2010, where he began with acquisition and management of investment properties. His real estate repertoire grew to include real estate sales in 2015, which has now become his focus. 

Whether it is his work life, or his social life, Jacob enjoys helping those in his community achieve their goals. He has high hopes for his debut season as the head coach of the freshman team, and appreciates all of the support from the Maverick community.

Damon Becker- Freshman O Line/D Line

This is Coach Becker’s 11th year coaching football for the LCCHS Mavericks. He was an all-league football player at University City High School in San Diego and graduated in 1985. He studied at San Diego Mesa College, San Diego State University and served in the U.S. Navy. Damon lives in Encinitas and works as a land surveyor. He and his awesome wife, Dana, have 3 children, Ryan (22, LCCHS Class of 2015), Robbie (20, SDA Class of 2017) and Molly (17, a Senior and Varsity Cheerleader at LCCHS).

Dylan Denso - Offensive Skills Coach

Dylan grew up in Laguna Niguel, CA. He attended Dana Hills High School where he played football, basketball, volleyball, and lacrosse. He then went on to play wide receiver for the San Diego State Aztecs. He was an integral part of the Aztecs 2012 Mountain West Championship team. After his SDSU football career, Dylan traveled across nine different countries throughout Asia and Europe. He returned home and immediately started pursuing a master’s degree in Sports Management. Dylan completed his master’s degree in 2017 at Long Beach State University. He now owns and operates his own business, Venture Sports Agency. He lives in Cardiff and enjoys being outdoors near the ocean. 

Mike Driver-Freshman Special Teams

Coach Driver will be in his 14th year coaching at LCC.  Prior to LCC, he was a coach and board member for the local Pop Warner team.  He was born and raised in North County and he attended San Dieguito High School and went on to graduate from USD.  He and his wife Rebecca have three children: Ryan, Jacob, and Rechael. Ryan attended SDA and Rechael and Jacob attended LCC. Rachael was a cheerleader at LCC and Jacob played football at LCC and is currently coaching for the Mavericks. Coach Driver worked in the insurance industry for 27 years, but now spends his time volunteering as a coach, working in his community, and pursuing his passion, which is the education of student athletes. He is founder and board member of Academics thru Athletics, which is a non-profit for underprivileged kids looking to get scholarship toward a college education.

JOSHUA RICH – Freshman D Line

This is Coach Rich’s 2nd year coaching football for the Mavericks. He lettered in football at Saugus High School and was an All-League High School Defensive and Offensive player.  He was a starting varsity player on both offense (tight-end) and defense (defensive-end) and was awarded "Best Athlete" by his peers.  After an unfortunate injury, his football career ended as a senior in high school.  Post-rehab, he has continued to be involved with recreational sports and he recently coached his daughter's soccer team to a Championship victory!

As an honor student, Josh earned an undergraduate degree in finance and later, became a distinguished Summa Cum Laude MBA graduate from the University of Pennsylvania-Clarion.  Josh currently provides for his family as a pharmaceutical executive and lives in La Costa Oaks.  He loves sharing life with his beautiful wife, Alicia, and their 2 wonderful kids, Milana (Sophmore at LCC) and Coleson (5th grade).

RILEY STEEL – Freshman O Line/ D Line

Matt Scanlin – Athletic Trainer

I grew up in Sonora, CA and attended Sonora High School, where I played water polo and swam for all 4 years.  In 2014, I moved to San Diego in 2014 to pursue a Bachelor's of Science degree in Athletic Training from San Diego State.  While at SDSU, I worked with the football team during their 2016 season as well as the Women's Track and Field team in their Spring 2017 season.  I also worked at Cathedral Catholic High School working with a variety of different sports throughout the school year.  I am currently pursuing a Master of Science degree in Sport Performance and Injury Prevention from California University of Pennsylvania through their online program.  This will be my first year at La Costa Canyon and I am excited to be a Maverick!  

Charlin Grogan- Athletic Director's Assistant

I am thrilled to be part of the Maverick family. I started out at Diegueño in 2015 as Attendance Secretary. I live in Carlsbad with my husband of 22 years and two boys. I am excited to be part of Athletics as through the years, my boys have played many sports and my oldest daughter was a “CHS Lancer Dancer” and brought home championships all four years. I am excited to be given the opportunity to work with such an amazing staff. I love all sports and can’t wait to start my journey here as a Maverick.

James Teague- Voice of the Mavericks

A native Southern Californian and graduate of Cal Poly begins his 15th year as a Spanish teacher at LCC.  He is often seen supporting LCC events with his wife and daughter Lia (12).  He has previously announced the Mavericks JV football games for four years, various LCC basketball games and played in numerous concerts with an LCC teacher band in support of student scholarships.  He is proud to be part of the great spirit among the Maverick Family.  Arriba los Mavs!
